Stage 2 MEDIA RELEASE
The Black Rainbow Living Well Foundation for Indigenous LGBTI Suicide Prevention and Living Well
In Australia same-sex attracted and gender diverse Australians are said to exhibit up to 14-times-higher rates of suicide attempts than our heterosexual peers.
For Indigenous Australians deaths by suicide are 1 in 24.
International research tells us that as Indigenous LGBTI people we are at risk of suicide in the 40-45 percentile range.
In January of this year we, Black Rainbow Australia, turned to crowd funding to establish ourselves as the first ever mental health and suicide prevention support service dedicated to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTI people.
Our campaign goal is $100,000.
At the time of writing our fundraising balance is at $6,199.00. Way short of our target goal. However, if we raise $20,000 in the next 19 days our tipping point will be reached and phases 1-3 will be achieved. Pledging just $25 to our Start Some Good campaign will make a very real difference and help us save lives. All pledges are rewarded (More details can be found at our campaign page: http://startsomegood.com/blackrainbow).
The public response so far has been amazing. We have been profiled in the Koori Mail, Star Observer, Gay News Network, Living Black Radio, CAAMA Radio, The Stringer, National Indigenous Radio Services, ABC Tasmania and ABC Mackay. Public support from Suicide Prevention Australia, beyond blue and Get Up has also been warmly received.
At the Black Rainbow Living Well Foundation we aim to provide culturally responsive social and emotional wellbeing, mental health, and suicide prevention support services and resources all within the context of our Indigeneity and multiple sexualities and gender diversity.
We also aim to contribute positively to the broader discourse of social and emotional wellbeing, mental health, and suicide prevention.
Perhaps the most important part of our campaign is to send a message to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander brothers and sisters – be they lesbian, gay, bisexual, brotherboy, sistergirl, transgender, intersex, queer or even unsure – that it’s okay to be YOU.
